MoPower Style Closes This Wednesday -- and moves to a new domain
 

Closing www.MoPowerStyle.com

The below is a long read – but well worth it is you are still a Mopar Enthusiast.


The reason for this change is quite simple. This community was started seven years ago as a forum using vBulletin 1 – which used a SQL database. Over the years, Vbulletin has been upgraded dozens of times – and had many very different versions. We’ve also had three different Portals, two different links applications, two different Classified ad (and their upgrades) applications and a Photo Album all use the database. 15,000+ people have registered, and there have been literally 100s of hacks to the code that runs the community. All of this added baggage is no longer needed, and has added some minor inefficiency to the database – and to the site’s ability to use some cool new features.

The best way to go about taking the Community in the direction that I have planned for it in the next ten years – was to start with a clean sheet or paper – using the very best new applications, and a fresh database without very old baggage. To have imported from the old database – would have been to import the old baggage.

After a lot of thought, I secured the old domain name of Mopar Style (without the previous hassles) and created a brand new site with the brand new applications. Frankly, I always liked the domain name of www.MoparStyle.com better anyway.

While it is still having minor tweaking done to it – it is fully functional with at least everything the old www.MoPowerStyle.com site had. I am leaving the old MoPower Style site viewable for the next few months – but it will close for new posting this Wednesday. It is a very simple process to copy a post of yours from the old site, and paste it to the new one.

Yes, if you would like to remain part of the community – you will have to register at the new site – www.MoparStyle.com. Yes your post count starts at zero again – big deal. Yes you will find a couple of minor changes to the forum structure (but I think for the better) – and a lot of new features and benefits. You have the option or registering with a different handle than you used at the old site – if that’s what you want to do. I would suggest that you give an indication of your old handle in your new sig.

 

There is a brand new Classified ads site there -- and the ads are still free. Some of the new features are a Face Book style profile, personal photo albums, and Social Groups.

If you were XtraStlye Member or a Director at this old site – you will have the same status at the new site. You will find threads to identify yourself on – as I’ll have to manually make those upgrades in your membership. I will do that in batches -- as quickly as I can, but show a little patience as I'm trying to accomplish a lot in a short time.

As with 99.99999% of the forums you’ve ever registered to post at – the registration process will have an email IMMEDIATELY sent to you, and in that email will be a confirmation link. This is done to reduce spammers and trolls. Click the link in that email to finish your registration. If you don’t get that email in a couple of minutes – look in your spam box because it will have been sent. It will have come from admin@moparstyle.com – so you might wish to first add that address to the white list of your spam filter. If you use one of those spam blockers that requires the sender to register – you are hosed because the email is automatically generated and no one can register it but you. You will need to add the email to the white list yourself. Often just sending an email to the address – adds the send to address to the white list. While your email might not go anywhere (the address is used for sending only and not for receiving) – it still might white list the address. If you can’t find the confirmation email within a couple of minutes – you can go to your UserCp of the new site and have another one sent to you (after you clear up your email problem).

I have a www.gmail.com account that I only use for registering to post on boards – and I give it out to no one else – so it is never spammed. You might consider doing that. It works well for me.

I did this now because next week I will be going into the hospital for surgery on my kidneys – and I will most likely in bed for many weeks after. I suggest that you do your registrations now – so that there is time to work out any problems (shouldn't be any) you might have before I become unavailable for a few weeks.

This old site will be left open for at least a month for reference – and there may be an opportunity for an individual, a group of individuals, a club, another board, or a Mopar orientated business to buy this site intact (with its applications, licenses, membership roster, domain name, images, sponsors, and data) and maintain it in the direction they see fit. The Biggest Change Ever Might Be Coming to MoPower Style

A Possibly Big Change to Happen To MoPower Style

 

For the end of the year -- after I heal up some from a couple of surgeries I'll be having in November.

Many of you know that for the last couple of years I've had another active site called Old Hippie (www.oldhippie.com), also with forums. I originally did it with some cheap applications (mostly free) -- but the site grew to the point of where I needed to go with the better pay for stuff, to take it to the next level and also have a better handle on hackers and spammers.

After doing a lot of investigating on the best way to go -- I decided to replace the Portal's MKportal (what we use here) application with VBAdvanced CMPS and to replace the forum's application SMF with vBulletin (like we use here). Investigations also told me that imports never go well and create a major Rat's nest of the SQL database. So what I did was to leave the www.oldhippie.com site up for reference -- but closed to additions -- and to start a brand new site from scratch at www.ConservativeOldHippie.com. During that very time consuming process of about 100 hours (with maybe another 100 to go with fine tuning and add more features) -- I found that the newest version of MKPortal doesn't work well with the newest version of Vbulletin -- and so I researched and replaced the portal with VBAdvanced CMPS. Major learning curve, and no freaking documentation or help -- but it works great once you figure it out.

On April 1, 2009 (after everyone has gotten off any information they want from it -- and re-post the better threads to the new site) I will delete the www.OldHippie.com site and direct it to the new site.
